Stories from Palestine

Warning: these stories challenge what we learnt about how Palestine was lost in 1948. Some stories show that it was not only the bad weapons that led to our defeat. There were many other factors. From what I heard and what I read, it was the lack of preparedness and lack of planning that lead to the defeat.

They are stories that people told me and I had no ways of verifications. So they stay as their own stories

Story 1: an old Palestinian man
We were poor and had no weapons. We hoped that the Arab armies would save us and we waited for them as we heard the sounds of fighting coming near our village.

The Arab armies came to our village including Iraqi soldiers. They were not provided with any food. They took our chickens and other food. They looked ill- equipped and really hungry. We could not say no to them because they were here to protect us. However, we wondered how hungry soldiers can fight.

Story 2: an old Egyptian man
I remember clearly the “preparation” for the war in Palestine. The Imam of Yemen sent his army to Egypt to go to Palestine with the Egyptian army. They came bare feet armed with daggers. King Farouq ordered shoes and military uniforms for them. Imagine how these soldiers fought a well equipped and well trained Zionist Militia!

Story 3- An old Palestinian lady from Caesarea

This is a small town by the sea where Palestinian have been living since history began. People were simple, poor and uneducated. When the fighting was intensifying near the town, a group of Zionist Militia came to the village and met the chefs and told them that the Militia would protect them. The Militia asked the villagers to go to the nearby woods and hide until the fight is over while the Militia lived in the village to protect it from…the fighting.

Remember that the story happened at a time before the spread of radio or other media. Villagers were not educated and did not really know about the plans to occupy Palestine.

Anyway the people left their village and went to hide in the wood. When the fighting was over they returned to their homes. Needless to say that their homes were already occupied and they had to leave. Some went to relatives in other villages while others ended up in the refugee camps in the West bank or Gaza.

Story 4: an old man from Uzi village
The whole village and the agricultural land around it were owned by a Syrian man living in Damascus. His relationship with his property was limited to the visits of his property manager bringing him the rent every year. Agents from the Jewish agency went to meet the owner and offered him to buy his land. It was a straight deal with no political ties. Yet clearly it was part of the agency’s plan to strip Palestinians of the land they have been living on and cultivating for generations. “One morning the villagers got up to military officers asking them to leave their homes. When the villagers protested that they were living in the land of their great great grandfathers, the officers showed them the sale documents. So more Palestinians had to leave and join the refugees’ camps. By the way that was the village where the Uzi gun comes from.

Story 5 My young friend

When I got to know M, she was a young Palestinian who just got married. She told me this story.

It was very difficult to find a flat or a house in her old Palestinian town, inside the green line. So the young couple looked to buy a home in the newish Jewish side which was had opened for Palestinians to own houses. The couple liked a house with a little garden and an apple tree. Before making a deal, she asked her father, as a civil engineer, to go and have a look at the house to see its value from his professional point.

“My dad was following us in the various rooms with the current Jewish owner. Suddenly he left us and stood steering from a window. I saw tears in his eyes. We finished the visit and left. In the car I asked him to explain his reaction. He said that the house was built at the site of his own father’s old house. He recognised the apple tree where he used to climb it as a young boy”. The house was gone and a new house was built but the tree stayed the same.

The case in the UN corridors

Thanks to Nada for finding this gem.

I tried to translate this amazing song. It really rings truth especially for those who have been following the Palestinian question or anyone who dealt with meetings at the UN. It is soo true.

https://www.facebook.com/nkassass/posts/10152974281941707

The “cause” travelled..
To present its complaint in the corridors of international courts..
The Assembly has dedicated the session to discuss the issue of “the case”..
Delegates from all nations came..
From countries of the North and the South..
From small countries..
From big countries..
Everyone met at a formal session..

The Assembly dedicated the session to discuss the issue of “the case” ..
The Secretary-General's made a speech..
He talked about peace..
And discussed the matter..
He launched the project:
The justice of the cause,
The freedom of peoples, human dignity and the Bill of Rights,
The cease-fire, the ending the conflict..

The voting, the recommendations, the decisions in outstanding problems, the consensus..

Reliable sources, quoting informed sources made statements..
The organisation studies.. The organisation felt..
The organisation decided..
To send an envoy..
The envoy stated that he is an envoy..
From the sources ..and that a solution ..
In the way of the solution ... and when night came...
The judges were tired..Long debate made them tired..
So they shut the books and went to sleep.

Outside there was the sound of winter and darkness..
And the desperate searching for peace...
And hunger was sleeping in the shelters of the displaced..
And the wind is still..

Uprooting the tents..

He is now playing football

Bes Bes loves playing “bou” in the garden. He walks while kicking the ball forwards till it stops-usually at the flower bed when he says “goo”. It seems that he is always scoring goals. We have to play according to his rules so when it is “ma tè” then it is his turn to kick the ball. He always stands near the end of the rockery facing the patio while the other person stands on the patio. This is one of his rules. Sometimes he changes position and waits in the patio sitting crossed legged on the bench! I think that is when he is tired but still wants to play. He takes little rests.

It has been a great achievement that Bes Bes can walk, run, kick, know the rules and create his own. Everything takes time but when he does it, everything is a great achievement that brings lots of genuine happiness to all of us especially when he laughs. He has the most gorgeous laughter. It is like a lovely laughing bell.

The cute extra Chromosome (3)

The cute extra chromosome (2)

The cute extra chromosome (1)

My nephew has the cute chromosome, the extra X so he is XXY or commonly known as Down’s syndrome.

On the World Down’s Syndrome day 22nd March, we wore T shirts with his picture laughing and the title: The cute chromosome. There is no doubt that he is –at least for me- the cutest boy in town. His laughter is sweet and his determination is amazing.

I remember the day he decided to stand up by himself and walk, we were alone in the house. My nephew went to the baby walker we had tried and failed to get him to use, and tried to stand up using it alone. Although I tried to help him after he fell several times, he refused my help. I sat watching him trying to stand and fall several times. Eventually he managed, looked at me and smiled. The he started pushing it to the end of the room. Hitting the door, he turned to me as if asking for help. I turned the walker around, and fell down. I helped him up and he continued pushing and walking.

We spent some time with him pushing and then me turning the walker around when he reached either side of the room. The he figured out how to turn the walker. At the end of the room, he would sit on the floor, change the direction of the walker then stand up (leaning on the walker) and start pushing and walking.

For few days afterwards, he kept playing with the walker, pushing, walking and turning by himself.  Then one day he stood up without the walker and took few steps by himself. One or two steps then he’d fall. He would then stand up alone and take few more steps. Eventually he was walking by himself.

I clearly remember when my daughter took her first few steps by herself and walked to the door as I came in from work. It was a magical moment for me. She was much, much younger when she started walking without really falling. Yet with Cute chromosome boy, we lived through each failed attempt, admiring his determination and his self motivation. Every little thing he does is magical.

We never know when he will achieve something new. We cannot compare him with “normal” children (those without an extra chromosome) and expect that by a certain age he will have reached a particular developmental milestone. Nothing to be taken for granted.

Living with my XXX boy has taught me how to appreciate much more, each thing he does is an achievement. Moreover, I’ve learnt to appreciate more in life: a nice gesture from a friend, a kind word from a stranger, the sun shining one day, a smile from a kid. Every little thing in life is worth appreciation. Thank you XXX cutest boy in town.

Down Memory lane: travelling in Armenia

In 1998 I traveled to Armenia and then by land to Georgia. We stopped at a little town in the north of Armenia where we met an old women outside her shack where she was trying to collect water to make tea. She told us that she used to be a famous ballerina performing in a theater in the town. In fact she was living in a shack almost opposite to the deserted theater. The dilapidated theater and her shack were a true picture of what was happening in Armenia then.

Say what you would in about the Soviet era but there is no doubt that art and in particular ballet flourished in all soviet countries. Of course Armenia was never part of the Soviet union as such but it was part of the Soviet bloc.

What I saw in 1998 was the immediate post-Soviet collapse when the country was starved of cash and thus just about all institutions collapsed. In Yerevan (one of my favorite cities) I stayed in the only hotel at that time and had the best breakfast I ever had in my whole life! Armenian food is so delicious. very early in the morning I saw an old lady sweeping the fallen leaves from the street. My colleague told me that the state does not have resources to pay salaries. Basically the woman was doing her job in earnest knowing very well that she will not be paid her salary and that she will have to find other type of work to gain money in order to live.

At that time I saw many houses opening a window as a little shop selling very basic items like soap and sugar. It was a reminder of what I saw in Cairo in the seventies after the economic open door policy was instigated.

Visiting health centres and clinics, I was surprised to meet doctors and nurses who were working their full hours, also knowing that they would not get a salary. Patients did not get medicines either.

I think the situation has changed but I still have good memory of the beautiful pink/red stone buildings, clean streets and squares and very friendly people in Armenia.

All the memories came back tonight while sorting some old photos!

New hope for Hepatitis C patients

There is good news for people affected by Hepatitis C. New medicines have been approved  by the US and European regulatory authorities. The medicines are supposed to be more effective and with less side effects than currently available medicines.

One medicine-sofosbuvir, made by Gilead biotechnology company is sold at US$ 85,000 per course or around $1,000/day in the US and Europe. However out of the estimated 180 million people infected by Hepatitis C, the majority live in developing countries. Egypt hosts the majority of those infected.

The high price is alarming public health advocates as we see the same story with HIV medicines unfolding in front of us. Decade or two ago, the price of anti-HIV medicines were US$ 10,000-15,0000/patient/year. At that level, it was not possible for patients, nor their governments and not even donors to think about universal access to treatment. people were left to die.

It was thanks to global public campaign and generic competition from Indian companies that the price of anti-HIV medicines is down to about $ 100/patient /year. Thus there is now about 8 million people on treatment.

In the case of Hepatitis C, there are a number of hopeful signs:

  1. Gilead is already in negotiation with a number of good quality Indian generics to produce the medicines and sell it at $2500/course. The talk is about allowing this price in India and in 60 other countries
  2. An Indian NGO (I-MAK) has filed a pre-grant patent opposition to sofosbuvir. This mechanism is allowed under Indian law (and under TRIPS) whereby any interested party can file a case against granting a patent before the company file a patent or before the patent office grant one. This mechanism was successfully used with other medicines in India
  3. In addition a group of NGOs, are trying to get UNITAID to intervene in the market as it did on HIV medicines. UNITAID is the multilateral organisation that does market interventions to make drugs available and affordable for HIV, TB, malaria (http://www.unitaid.eu/en/)

These actions mean that:
  1. Indian generics will soon be manufacturing the medicine
  2. The medicine will be available at a cheaper price in India and probably Sub Sahara Africa
What about Egypt?

New medicine New hope for Hepatitis C Virus (HCV)

Gilead drug company acquired the US-FDA approval for Sofosbuvir to be used to treat HCV. This is an oral treatment which is more effective, has less side effects and is used for shorter duration than the current medicines (Interferon). However the drug is expected to be priced at $80,000/patient in the US.  Yet studies show that it can be priced at only $100-200

Therefore even if the company decided to use tiered pricing for developing countries at-even- 10% of the US price, the medicine would be still very expensive ($8,000) for thsoe countries. The WHO estimates that there are 150 million people infected with HCV.  The majority of infection is in Egypt where it is estimated that 20% of the population are infected by the virus.

The disease leads to liver cirrhosis and liver cancer.

In India, NGOs have already filed for pre-grant opposition in the court.  This is a good use of the India law of Intellectual Property Rights which allows people to oppose granting a patent even before a company/person file for a patent application. It may be that the Egyptian law does not allow for such public health safeguard. However, the government can issue compulsory licensing which allows generic companies to produce the medicine legally at an inexpensive price.

Given that it is likely that reputable, quality Indian generics could make the medicine for Indian market, it would be in Egypt favour to negotiate importing the medicine from these companies.

What are the plans of the ministry of health in Egypt?

MBs faults since June 30th

There has been much debate and analysis of the MBs mistakes over the time they ruled Egypt. However I think that their mistakes since June 30the are not well discussed. In my humble opinion, I think committed 7 mistakes:

  1. Insistence on having a peace solution on their terms- basically return to pre 30 June situation with Morsi, Shura council,...etc. That was impossible. Thus they caused or at least contributed to failure of negotiation. I base their position on their own literature and talks
  2. Failure to recognise the scale of popular hatred (not just the bias media and deep state) but ordinary people
  3. Failure to recognise that changing slogans and tactics are not effective with ordinary Egyptians anymore. Changing their slogans from Morsi and Islam to Egypt and democracy did not deceive ordinary people who saw that as a change in tactics to return to power and not because they believe in democracy or Egypt
  4. The use of their old tactics of violence against Copts, national treasures (Mallawi museum ) and police stations succeeded only in getting  more ordinary Moslems and Copts to fear their return
  5. Relying on foreign forces e.g. Qatar, US, EU and misunderstanding US/EU approaches as support for them. If nothing else, this helped to alienate them further in the eyes of ordinary Egyptians who saw them as traitors
  6. Insulting the people as "cowards" "traitors”
  7. Last and not least is their failure to recognise their crimes (e.g. at Ithadiya) and mistakes during their ruling and to review their beliefs and approaches. Instead they have blamed everybody else

The hope is that young MBs generations spend time reflecting on the past three years –in fact on the past 80 years- and re-examine their movement. This includes reviewing everything from their fundamental MBs mission, aims, to strategies, alliances, and tactics. They have to realise that they are not the voice of God or the holders of truth. They must recognise that they are part of Egypt nation not of a dream return to old times where neither justice nor God’s word were implemented by ordinary mortals.

Of being a YoYo

“And how do you feel about the sad things happening in Egypt? ” My kind friends and acquaintances in UK always ask me about my dear country and are really affected by what they see on TV. Egypt, for them, is a country whose history fascinated them since school time and perhaps a place where they had a good holiday. Moreover, it is a country that inspired them when Egypt’ amazing youth led a peaceful revolution in January 2011.

After June 30th, I have told everyone I met that Egyptians are changing dictatorship regime through their own way of democracy, that the ballot box is not the only way, and that Morsi damaged Egypt and therefore people wanted to stop him and his clan from ruining the country before it is too late. I have even said that the army did not start a coup but intervened on behalf of the people.

I still say that but I cannot help feeling frustrated that death has become a number-just a number. How can these numbers help to achieve the calls of January 25th: bread, freedom, social justice, and human dignity? For me, the fundamental spirit of Jan 2011 is that the life and dignity of any human has a value not just for immediate family but for society and for the rulers.

Yet what I hear (not only on twitter but from ordinary people) are calls for immediate revenge.  I always felt that as Egyptians we are very “either or” nation: if you disagree with me, then you are in the wrong. But this has moved fast from “your are wrong” to “you are my enemy” to “you should be shot -sometimes without even a trial!”. Disapproving the state killing of MBs sparks an immediate accusation of being an MB or one of their “sleeping cells or a “human rights softy”. Needless to say that expressing support for killed soldiers ignites an accusation of being an “army arse licker”.

My thoughtful friend described the situation as “now the abscesses have been lanced, we need to deal with the out-pouring of poison and the lengthy process of purification.” When I said that the lancing was accompanied by too much blood due to “bad old equipment”, my friend said that it was what we had and that other options were not successful.

As I read and hear people’s comments and views, I go silent. Being away from the middle of events makes me cautious not to “judge from my arm chair”. Perhaps if I were in the middle of Cairo I would accept more blood? Or perhaps I would speak against it with more credibility. I do not know. I am physically here in UK but mentally and spiritually somewhere wondering in the streets of Cairo and of my home town. In my home town my heart refuses to cry over the ruins of places that have important value in my life. Instead it keeps searching for ways to turn the hatred and animosity to something near “tolerance”. My mind still dreams of dignity for the poor girls who struggle to find a place that can be a toilet, for poor women who don’t know how to feed the kids tomorrow, and for the youth who want to speak without fear of being killed or going to prison.

So answering my friends’ question: I am a yoyo: down when I wake up to news of killings and up if there was no blood that morning. Yet despite everything gloomy happening, I am really optimistic that tomorrow will be better than today-perhaps not exactly tomorrow but the day after.
