Corruption from the top- The story of Am Ibraheem

This is the famous jock through which Egyptians described corruption few years ago.

One day Am Ibraheem-the gargeer (rocket) seller[1] was so troubled by the fact that he is too poor to support his family. His friend advised him to write a letter to president Bush asking for help from America -the rich country. He helped him to write the sad story but did not write Am Ibraheem’s address.

The letter reaches president Bush who was so affected that he sent Am Ibraheem an envelope containing a card and $1,000. Not knowing the address, Bush sent the letter to President Mubarak to deliver to Am Ibraheem.

Mubarak opened the letter then he gave the card and $600 to the PM to send to Am Ibraheem.

The PM opened the envelope and then gave the card and $400 to the minister of local govt to send.

The minister opened the envelope and then gave the card and $ 200 to the governor of the city.

The governor opened the envelope then gave the card and $100 to the local Chief who opened the envelope and then send it to Am Ibraheem.

Finally Am Ibraheem received a nice card from Bush saying: I wish you the best of luck!

[1] Am is an Egyptian term translated to Uncle but it is a way for young people to address older men. The “Am” who sells rocket is usually a poor old man who earns his living selling a dozen packets of rocket to passer bys in the market.
